The Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) cluster has an open position to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a strong record of scholarly research in high performance computing applied to many-body quantum systems such as condensed matter, quantum chemistry, quantum simulation or others. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in tensor networks and/or neural quantum states. Postdoctoral experience is desired. We seek candidates with an open mind towards multidisciplinary research and whose research area, methods and/or tools can impact multiple fields and society. We can consider more senior candidates too, e.g. Assoc. Prof. and Prof.

 

The candidate will join a young and growing department including other experts in many-body quantum systems working in areas such as quantum simulation and quantum computation, quantum error correction, quantum-inspired computing, quantum open systems, quantum transport, quantum thermodynamics, photonics etc. Furthermore, Singapore offers a stimulating and well-funded research environment with many experts in town.

 

Candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to developing and maintaining an active research program. Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate courses in mathematics, physics or chemistry. Lead Editor opening at Physical Review Research

The American Physical Society is conducting an international search for a new Lead Editor of Physical Review Research, a fully open access, peer-reviewed journal welcoming the full spectrum of research topics of interest to the physics and physics-adjacent communities.

The Lead Editor is the primary scientific advisor to the journal and chairs the Editorial Board. They provide community oversight of the journal’s content and direction, strategically advising the journal’s Chief Editor in a consultative capacity. The role is key in helping shape the journal’s long-term goals and growing and elevating the journal within the community.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Stature in one or more areas of research within the scope of Physical Review Research and within its author and referee community
  • Visionary and strategic with the ability to look at what’s required in broad terms and contribute to the development of strategic plans
  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of making the right connections and build networks both internally and externally
  • Impeccable communication skills and ability to engage others
  • Ability to make prompt independent evaluations and decisions
  • Track record of mobilizing a group of people (without direct line management authority) to effectively support the the goals of the journal and the portfolio at large
  • Able to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience chairing meetings with diplomacy and ensuring that all members have the opportunity to contribute to the Board meaningfully
  • Proven track record of identifying opportunities for improvement and planning/executing delivery plans to implement those improvements

The Lead Editor is expected to maintain their present position and location while devoting a percentage of their time to this position (typically not more than 10%). The initial appointment is for a three-year term, with renewal possible after review. The position comes with a competitive stipend, which is negotiable and dependent on the established time commitment.

Singapore Academies South-East Asia Fellowship (SASEAF) Programme 2024

The SG Academies South-East Asia Fellowship (SASEAF) Programme aims to attract bright postgraduate researchers from South-East Asia to Singapore research institutions for a 2-year long fellowship. It is administered by three academies in Singapore - the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS), together with the Academy of Medicine Singapore (AMS), and the Academy of Engineering Singapore (SAEng) - and funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Applications should prepare a short (up to 2 pages) research proposal in consultation with a host faculty member. While applicants may propose any field of research done in Singapore’s research institutions, the topics of Infectious Diseases, Population Health/Public Health, and Sustainability, including Urban Agriculture will be favoured in the current round.

The successful applicant will receive a monthly stipend of up to SG$6,500, relocation allowance, and access to professional development and networking opportunities during their time in Singapore.

Part-time Associate Editor position in quantum science at Physical Review A

Physical Review A (PRA) is looking for a new part-time Associate Editor in the area of quantum science to join our team.

For more than 50 years, PRA has been publishing important developments in the rapidly evolving areas of AMO physics, quantum science, and related fundamental concepts. The journal is growing, and we are looking for someone working in the area of quantum science to join our team of editors on a part-time basis. The candidate would be expected to maintain their current academic position while serving as an editor for PRA.

A few notes about the selection criteria:
 
(1) Current active involvement and stature in the relevant field of research. 
 
You should be publishing, and in good journals. Invited talks at or involvement in organisation of reputable conferences or awards can also serve as evidence of active involvement and stature in the field. Within quantum science there is an enormous breadth of sub-topics ranging from fundations to applications, so someone with experience in a wider variety of topics is likely to be preferred over someone with more narrow expertise. This is another reason why you should work on something a bit different after your PhD.
 
(2) An outstanding record as a referee and a demonstrated commitment to peer review. 
 
Serve as a good referee on papers when asked, obviously. If you haven't reviewed for APS, you can express your interest here. Write useful, constructive reports including suggestions on how the manuscript can be improved (even if you don't think it meets the standards of the journal). Return reports quickly and/or within the timeframe you promise. It's OK to decline if a paper is outside your expertise or you are too busy - we really appreciate fast responses. We don't have access to your referee record at other journals, so it is better to concentrate your refereeing service at a few publishers that you submit your own manuscripts too, rather than spreading your efforts across dozens of different publishers. Particularly for the case of for-profit publishers - if you don't publish with them why should you volunteer your time for their benefit?
 
(3) The ability to work within the editorial team and the desire to maintain the quality and reputation of the journal. 
 
Evidence of desire to maintain the quality and reputation of the journal can include service as a good referee and submitting your own good papers to the journal.

PhD openings at Singapore University of Technology and Design

I have just joined Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) as a faculty member. I will be slowly building up a research group as grant funding accumulates.

Presently there is an open call for applications for the SUTD PhD Programme for commencement in January 2025. The application deadline is 30th September. Successful scholarship applicants will receive a monthly stipend of S$3,500 (for Singapore citizens) or S$2,700 (for foreigners), with an additional $500 per month after passing the PhD Qualifying Exam.

Since these scholarships are not tied to any particular grant, I welcome applicants interested in working with me on theoretical projects related to any of the following topics:

Postdoctoral Position at Wave Transport in Complex Systems Lab—Wesleyan University

The Wave Transport in Complex Systems (WTICS) Lab at Wesleyan University is
opening a post-doctoral position on wave transport in theory or/and experiment
using microwave and RF analogue circuitry. The candidate must have a basic
knowledge of theory of metamaterials. A knowledge of software packages for
electronic design (such as COMSOL, SPICE etc) is desirable. Specific areas of research that are relevant to the current post include:

Postdoctoral Positions at Nankai University, Tianjin, China

Applications are solicited for postdoctoral positions in experimental/theoretical optics and photonics in the research group of Prof. Zhigang Chen/Hrvoje Buljan at Nankai University, China, which is one hour away from the capital Beijing and the alma mater of Shiing-Shen Chern. The areas of emphasis are topological photonics, nonlinear optics, optical trapping and manipulation, and machine-learning photonics. A PhD in physics, optics, or related area is required. It is expected that the candidate should have basic numerical skills and/or optical experimental skills and research experience with a good track of record in publications.


The initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of extension pending on performance and research funding. If accepted, the salary is competitive (annual gross salary > RMB 500,000, about $70,000), with possible additional merit award depending on academic performance evaluated at the end of each year. Free on-campus apartment is available, and the living cost is very low compared to income. The position will be funded under the China Postdoctoral International Exchange and Introduction Program, with the purpose of attracting outstanding PhD graduates to join the university and conduct postdoctoral research.

1. In general, applicants shall be under the age of 35. As for key disciplines supported by the university, the limitation on age can be eased to 38 years old.
2. Both Chinese and foreign graduates obtaining their PhD (from overseas top universities or supervised by an internationally recognized scientist) in recent 3~5 years can apply.

Postdoc Opening at Tohoku University: Condensed Matter and AMO Theory

Tomoki Ozawa's group at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, has a postdoc opening (the official title would be Specially Appointed Assistant Professor, or Tokunin-Jokyo in Japanese), which can start as soon as the decision is made or from April 1, 2025 at the latest. The position lasts for three years. 
The group works on theoretical condensed matter physics and AMO (atomic, molecular, and optical) physics, in particular on topological phases and/or many-body physics in these systems. A part of the salary of this position will be from the KAKENHI Kiban-B grant, “Geometrical effects in non-Hermitian quantum systems."

PhD position in Floquet topological photonics (experimental)

The group of Alberto Amo at PhLAM laboratory (CNRS / University of Lille) has a PhD position opening in Floquet topological photonics (experimental). The PhD thesis is part of the ERC EmergenTopo project and aims at studying linear and nonlinear topological phases in time modulated synthetic lattices. More information about the project can be found in the application website.

According to the job advertisement, the PhD project will broadly study fractal lattices and photon-photon interaction effects in coupled optical fibers, building on the group's recent work published in Physical Review Letters. This work falls within the emerging research direction of synthetic dimensions in photonics, which uses spatial or periodic modulations to small systems of a few coupled resonators or waveguides to emulate higher-dimensional lattices. There are already several reviews on this topic, including "Synthetic dimension in photonics", "Topological quantum matter in synthetic dimensions", and "Topological photonics in synthetic dimensions".

Academic working conditions

Comments on a Comment published a few weeks ago in Nature Human Behaviour: Quality research needs good working conditions.

There is "a lack of permanent positions with dedicated research funding, leading to an overreliance on project-based funding with short-term research positions." Unless one lands a tenured position, the longest term of reliable employment one is likely to encounter is during the PhD studies (3+ years). Postdocs depend on periodic renewal of short-term 1 or 2-year contracts and face the prospect of probably needing to move to a different city or country if they need to take up a new position. It's hard.

The relation between turnover and research quality is nuanced. Yes, in certain circumstances pressure can foster creativity and productivity, but the threat of non-renewal is not the only form of pressure that can be applied. Internal project deadlines ("if we don't have a promising result by x, let's try a different line of research"). Performance bonuses. Conference submission deadlines. There are many possibilities.

On the flip side, there are many examples of stagnant research institutions dominated by faculty members nearing retirement with no incentives to undertake quality new research. The problem with research is that it isn't always successful. It is hard for an outsider to distinguish hard but unfruitful work from slacking off.

Unfortunately the terms of employment contracts are typically controlled by upper university management. Thus, even those tenured faculty who would prefer to have a more stable team composition have little power to effect change.

IBS-APCTP Conference on Advances in The Physics of Topological and Correlated Matter

Last month I attended the IBS-APCTP Conference on Advances in The Physics of Topological and Correlated Matter. It was great to be attending a conference in-person after so long! Slides from many of the talks are available here. Summaries of some of the talks from the notes that I took:

Prof. Changyoung Kim (IBS/SNU) spoke about tunable anomalous Hall conductivity in correlated electron systems. The anomalous Hall effect is a Hall effect that occurs in the absence of an external magnetic field in materials exhibiting a spontaneous magnetization of the electron spins. An extreme example of this is half-metals, where the energy bands are completely filled (insulating) for one spin and partially-filled (conducting) for the other spin. 

One way to potentially enhance the anomalous Hall conductivity is to dope the material to tune the Fermi level of the partially-filled band to a region of high Berry curvature, but in some cases this kind of perturbation picture will fail due to the doping-inducing a reconstruction of the band structure to form a distinct phase. It is important to distinguish the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from (potentially much larger) extrinsic (disorder-induced) contributions.

Another approach applicable to thin film materials is substrate-induced magnetization, which can lead to interesting thickness-dependent material properties including the magnitude and even sign of the anomalous Hall conductivity changing as single layers are added or removed. These changes can be resolved using spin-resolved ARPES.

Prof. Masatoshi Sato (Kyoto University) talked about Majorana fermions in topological superconductors, particularly differences between spinless and spinful Majorana fermions; the latter require additional symmetries for protection. The symmetry requirements will likely make it quite extremely challenging to carry out robust braiding operations required for topological quantum computation. Another application of Majorana particles outside of quantum computing is to use them to probe the properties of the underlying superconductor, since they share the same symmetries as the underlying superconducting gap function.

Prof. Takashi Oka (University of Tokyo) covered Floquet engineering of topological bands and novel topological nonlinear optical effects, including Hall response dependent on a nonlinear gauge-invariant curvature term, related to theoretical analysis published in Nature Physics at the end of last year. Floquet engineering of topological bands has of course been a very influential idea since the late 2000s (Oka and Aoki's 2009 paper has amassed more than 1000 citations!), with a variety of linear (and nonlinear) phenomena occurring sensitive to the period and strength of the periodic Floquet driving.

Prof. Gil-Ho Lee (POSTECH) discussed his group's experimental work on Floquet engineering of graphene using microwaves. The effective strength of the Floquet-induced band structure modifications scales as \( E / \omega^2 \), where \( E \) is the (normalized) field strength of the drive and \( \omega \) is its frequency. By using a lower frequency microwave drive (instead of more conventional optical pumping), the required field strength is reduced, making it practical to study continuous wave driving while maintaining a sufficiently low temperature. The catch, however, is that the lower drive frequency is accompanied by smaller Floquet band gaps that require scanning tunneling microscopy to resolve. Ongoing work aims to observe Floquet topological bands induced by polarized microwave driving, and to improve the coupling between the microwave antenna and the graphene sheet to probe higher Floquet drive strengths.

Dr. Andrew Pierce (Harvard -> Cornell?) talked about thermodynamic measurements of topological states in magic angle graphene, the subject of his PhD studies and three (!) Nature Physics papers published in the last year ([1], [2], [3]). He mentioned that bilayer graphene is an extremely fickle system - every sample is different and it is very hard to reproduce experimental results. Trilayer graphene, on the other hand, can offer a more reliable platform for exploring moire phenomena including twist-induced superconductivity.

Dr. Robert-Jan Slager (Cambridge University) talked about unconventional multi-gap topological phases. In the conventional topological band theory we usually consider a single band gap whose topological properties (and the existence or absence of robust edge states) is determined by topological invariants of all the bands below the gap, leading to the well-known periodic table of topological insulators. Interestingly, the topological band theory can be generalized to novel multi-gap topological phases which are trivial under the conventional topological band theory, involving partitions of the band structure into three or more sectors. One example of non-trivial multi-gap topological invariant is the Euler class. These ideas are now being generalized to Floquet systems.

Prof. Aris Alexandradinata (UC Santa Cruz) presented a topological principle in photovoltaics. Bulk photovoltaic effects known as shift currents are attracting interest as a potential route towards making more efficient solar cells. A nonzero shift current requires a material with broken inversion symmetry. Beyond this necessary condition it is not clear what is the best way to maximize the strength of the shift current. New classes of topological phases may provide a route to finding materials with stronger shift currents. He currently as a few PhD and postdoctoral research fellow positions open!

Prof. Emil Bergholtz (Stockholm University) talked about fractional Chern insulators and quantum geometry in moire materials. A long-standing goal in the field of topological materials has been the search for fractional Chern insulators, which are hoped to exhibit high temperature fractional quantum Hall states. The "simple" picture of a fractional Chern insulators is that they are lattice systems exhibiting nearly flat bands with nonzero Chern numbers that form a lattice analogue of the Landau levels underlying the conventional quantum Hall and fractional quantum Hall effects. In practice, however, the physics is more complicated. Even if the energy dispersion is relatively flat, other properties of the band including its quantum metric and Berry curvature can be strongly non-uniform, disrupting the analogy with continuum Landau levels and destroying the fragile fractional quantum Hall states. This seems to also be the case with the nearly flat topological bands arising in twisted bilayer graphene: although the single particle band structure is flat, interactions combined with the non-trivial momentum-dependence of the quantum metric lead to self-consistent (Hartree-Fock) bands with strong dispersion, inhibiting the formation of fractional quantum Hall states. He also has some postdoc openings!

PRA seeks a part-time remote Associate Editor

Since the start of the year I have been an Associate Editor at Physical Review A. So far it has been an interesting and enjoyable position, giving me exposure to topics I wouldn't normally read about as part of my own research.

They say that refereeing papers helps you to write better papers. The same is true for journal editorial work.

Even though there is less time for refereeing, editorial work also helps with reviewing papers, since you read many great (and some not-so-great) reports and can see what kinds of comments are useful and how others typically respond to critical comments.

PRA is now recruiting a part-time remote Associate Editor with expertise in quantum information and quantum foundations. The deadline to apply is July 9th, 2022.

The great resignation in physics

Yesterday Nature published a feature article asking "Has the great resignation hit academia?" The article mostly focuses on experiences of researchers in the humanities and life sciences, but they are equally relevant to physics. Some snippets:

"Grievances include a lack of support, increased workloads, ..., and salaries that have not kept up with cost of living." 

Unofficially, it seems that the salaries of fresh postdocs in Singapore have not increased significantly since 2015, despite rising costs of living, especially rent. Frustratingly, professors seem to be powerless to address this due to postdoc salaries being fixed by upper management or funding agency rules. Consequently it is very hard to attract and retain junior researchers.

"A 2018 study predicted that higher education would lose half to two-thirds of its academic workforce to retirement, career burnout or job dissatisfaction within five years."

"By May 2021, one in five academic jobs in Australia had been cut."

The sacking of Australian research staff is particularly galling given that upper management and administration seem to be doing better than ever. With the boom in quantum technologies many Australian researchers are realizing they can keep doing the same physics under much better working conditions in spin-off companies including Q-CTRL, Quantum Brilliance, Nomad Atomics, and Diraq.

PhD position openings in topological photonics and turbulence in fluids of light

Two ERC-funded PhD position openings in the group of Alberto Amo in Lille, France on the following subjects:

1. Nonlinear topological phases in lattices of coupled micropillars (experimental)

The goal of this thesis is to study experimentally novel topological phases in photonic lattices. We will employ coupled semiconductor micropillars in which photons can hop from site to site. Taking advantage of the extraordinary photon-photon interactions in this system we aim at observing nonlinear topological effects. This PhD thesis is part of the ERC Consolidator grant EmergenTopo, and will be realized in collaboration with French and international theoreticians.


2. Turbulence in polariton fluids (experimental).

The goal of this thesis is to experimentally investigate the turbulent properties of a polariton fluid when passing and obstacle engineered in the microcavity. In a polariton superfluid, not only friction is strongly reduced, but vortices have very special properties: their circulation is quantised and it can only take integer values. Up to now, the main drawback to study turbulent phenomena has been the need of ultrafast single shot measurements, with time resolution in the picosecond scale. Using cutting-edge time resolved spectroscopic techniques developed in our group, we will study the emergence of vortices and other turbulent phenomena in a polariton fluid. We will investigate turbulence in obstacles of different shapes, including obstacles with the form of a plane wing to answer the question of whether a plane can fly in a superfluid of light.

The perfect postdoc

It's natural for graduating PhD students to agonise over their next position.

Are my career prospects doomed If I stay close to home? Do I need to do a postdoc at a top US university to guarantee a faculty position? Would I be better off taking up a position in industry? What if I screw up and it doesn't work out?

No matter where you end up, you will gain valuable experience and create new opportunities for the future.

An infamous example of this is Nick Leeson, whose fraudulent stock trading brought down his bank and led to his imprisonment in Singapore. He now makes money speaking and consulting on risk management and fraud detection!

Singapore Quantum Jobs

Qove Laboratory seeks postdoctoal fellows and PhD students: designing and building quantum technologies for quantum networks based on superconducting circuits, rare-earth ions, and integrated photonics. This is a newly-funded NRF Fellowship project with funding for 5 years.

Senior Research Fellow / Research Fellow positions at the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University on development finite difference time domain methods for coupled electromagnetic and quantum systems. I guess this is related to the new Quantum Science & Engineering Centre announced at the end of last year.
